I have owned several mp3 players over the past five years, and yes, none of them have been an iPod. I have used the original iPod, iPod and iPhone Touch, but have NOT owned these so wouldn’t be familiar with day to day issues and hassles with those.

that said, i have to give the device the stars because it meets my criteria and didn’t cost me an arm and a leg the iPhone would have. I wanted to
1) store all my music, photos and maybe a few videos. all this adds up to around 60 gigs, so ended up going with a higher capacity device.
2) wirelessly sync my collection
3) listen to the radio if / when i got bored of listening to my collection.

It does all of these things very well.

What i don’t like about it (or in other words, things that prevent me from giving this device 5 stars):

1) the Zune software eats up all processor cycles when syncing. my prior media players synced with windows media player and that didn’t seem to bog down the processor as much. Also, i find Zune’s (pc software) interface a little confusing as i can’t easily tell which song / file is being synced and how much is done. WMP seemed to have a nicer indicator per song (in sync results).

2) no side volume controls. i typically use this device in the gym. controlling the volume becomes a pain because it can only be done by the squicircle. if capacitive controls are enabled, i have to stop what i’m doing, take out the device from the arm pouch and then lower the volume. the gigabeat i owned earlier had dedicated volume buttons on the side that i could use with one hand. Same is the case with the iPhone (not the iPod Touch) and my new Palm Pre.

3) non-standard (proprietary) connector. we can thank the iPod for starting this trend and microsoft for foolishly aping it and departing from standardization. this means you need to spend extra to obtain charging cables and car adapters. Compare to the Palm Pre (as a player in this regard) that has a standard micro-usb cable. Though in all fairness, the iPod suffers from this same problem (proprietary connector) as well.

In my weighting, i discount the negatives of 2 and 3 above because i knew these before i bought the device. they would’ve been nice to have, but i knew going in that i wouldn’t be getting these with this device, but still i do mention that in case it is a deal-breaker for others still researching and reading reviews.

Positive experiences:

1) the Zune software is simply very neat when it comes to retrieving song information! it amazed me that it got information for a lot of foreign mp3s (and several of them inconsistently id3-tagged) quickly and correctly! i was also able to very easily search for relevant artist / song and apply album information to the song in question.

2) when playing songs on PC, the Zune draws up impressive graphics and trivia about the artist / song playing. it looks very artsy and neat and the total effect i found was very pleasing.

these features impressed some of my friends who’re hardcore itunes believers (though not enough to ditch their apple devices).

I’ve been enjoying my Zune installation for a while now, but I had one thing that bugged me: operating the touchpad with the player mounted in the ashtray was a bit tricky when stationary, but very tricky when moving. It was also time to post some pictures of my handiwork.

Fortunately Soundgate have now released a remote control for their Zune car kit, called the Remcore, so I got myself one. Fitting it was easy enough: open up my dashboard (for the last time I hope) and insert the plug into the socket on the Soundgate box. Harder than that was deciding where to put the control: it had to be easily accessible while driving. After a little experimentation I chose a spot on the “batwing” – a dashboard piece�at the front of the center console so nicknamed due to its shape. This also allowed me to run the cable without having to drill any holes in anything. The remote comes with a little bracket that allows it to be removed and handed to passengers, I guess, as it has a long cable attached. As I can carry a maximum of one passenger, and they are sitting right next to me, I didn’t use the bracket and instead stuck the remote directly onto the plastic with double-sided tape.

(Note in the picture the Remcore is the all-black control to the left: the silver switch in the center of the batwing is for my hands-free bluetooth kit). With the ashtray closed, the stealthy nature of the install is clear:

In use it is great: I can easily control play/pause/next/prev without taking my eyes of the road or even opening the ashtray to try and see the screen. If I want to change my music selection (when stationary) then I pop open the ashtray and navigate around. The remote takes a little getting used to as the middle button is play/pause and the top right button is equivalent to the middle of the touchwheel, but I can live with that. If I had more time and skill I would probably try and craft a nice tinted window in the lid of the ashtray so that I could see the screen without even opening it and yet keep it invisible when turned off. However I have neither required attribute.

Will A New Zune HD Challenge The 4th Gen iPod Touch?

With the Apple onslaught all but sweeping away every last vestige of resistance, speculation over Microsoft’s own answer to the iPod Touch has begun circulating across the blogosphere.

If the experts are to be believed ,a brand spanking new Zune HD might be ready by the start of 2011. This courtesy of ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley whose in-the-know sources hinted at such a PMP coming soon. No specifics though, so in the meantime we can twiddle our thumbs and wonder.

Wonder is indeed what’s been going on at the blogs who’ve circulated this bit of news. Of course, since nothing’s official yet there’s been a speculation-fest on what kind of hardware to expect from a revamped Zune.

The Zune enjoys the privilege of being well-regarded both for its looks and performance by the tech press and fans alike. Some even consider it superior to the competition.

Word of an ARM CPU has been flying around together with probable Windows Phone 7 software. Unfortunately this is all we’ve got to tell.

But while Apple gloat about their new devices, what have Microsoft been doing? Rumors suggest that they have been secretly plotting a revamp of their very own personal music player. Strangely enough, we have not heard much from Microsoft lately regarding the Zune HD, and what direction it would be going next. But one thing we can say about it is that it is definitely one of the best digital music players currently on the consumer market. It looks cool and stylsh, and even the interface and features are sleek along with enough power under the hood to put a big smile on our face. This is a few reasons why we don’t want Microsoft to push the Zune HD aside in the near future, but rumors suggest otherwise with something new on the horizon. An article over on ZDNet suggests that some sources have told her that a new, remodelled Zune HD is in the works. While details are scarce, we predict that it would continue in the fashion of Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Phone 7 series while other speculation suggests that an ARM CPU could also be involved. The new Windows Phone 7 devices are definitely giving out some love to the Zune, and therefore its only certain that we can expect an upgrade in the near future.
